Dancing animals music video task

For this music video task I selected a couple of clips from each folder (dancing animals, landscape, James Bond) then I put them with the song heart of the city.
I started with the clip of James Bond which says 'The names Bond, James Bond', I chose this because I thought it would be easy to work with and would fit in well with my next clip therefore making the whole video seem more fluid rather than individual clips put together randomly.
After this I tried to choose a song that blended in well with the previous speech to again try to get the flawless transitions between to make the video seem more fluent. I used a filter to make the screen swipe into the next clip so that it looked more interesting and entertaining to the viewers, also so it fit in well with the theme of music and dancing.
The next clip flashes onto a birds eye view of a city spiralling in a circular motion around one main landmark. As there is a clear view of roads I chose my next clip to be of the shark and tiger characters  dancing in the car because it fit in well. Then staying on the road theme I chose from the landscape folder, a video of cars driving along the road which I thought could be almost representing what the characters in the car are seeing.
Going into the next clip I used a wave filter to show a variation of filters but also because it injects fun to the chip which goes with the music and video of the tiger dancing.
For the final dancing animal clips I left the black pages in-between the videos to make it seem almost like you are blinking and to therefore bring more focus onto the clips when they pop up.
On the very last clip I used a faded filter which replicated the video of the top faintly, I did this to try to show the video was coming to an end and was fading out.

Presentations

Our feedback from class said that our overall presentation was good and clear for the students however there was a few minor points we needed to change such as correct a typo which said that Borgen was a film rather than a tv drama and also to be specific which the number of episodes within each season both of which have now been adapted now.

Mise en scene tasks

Mise en scene-

  • Mise en scene is a French term meaning 'what is put into a scene/frame'.
  • Visual information infant of camera.
  • Communicate to the audience about setting (time/ place) and characters.
  • Made up of 5 elements-
- Settings and props
- Costume, hair and makeup
- Facial expressions and Body language
- Lighting and colour
- Positioning of characters/ objects within frame

Setting and props-

TASK: What setting and props would you find in...
1) A science fiction film-
Planets, space, aliens, laser guns, spaceships
2) A romantic comedy-
Restaurants, roses, hearts, couples, ring
3) A horror film-
Dark rooms, abandoned buildings, knifes, weapons

Costume hair and makeup-

  • Tells where a film is set (what point in time) and what society/culture it will centre around.
  • Indicates
  • Certain costumes can signify the characters (example- black coat associated with Vampires)

Facial expressions and body language-

  • How someone is feeling
  • How one character feels towards another (their relationship)
TASK: What feelings/emotions do the following images convey?

This image could be suggesting that an interrogation is taking place. The man on the left seems to be looking down at something giving the idea that he holds power and strength over whoever he is looking at off of the screen.

This image is suggesting that the man on the right is in a lot of pain and struggling and the man seems to be helping the man but quite discretely almost as though it is a secret.

The man in the centre is giving the impression that he holds power and importance over the other men because of how he is standing (hands on hips, chest out) also because of his hat and sunglasses which the other men don't have.

Positioning of characters and objects within a frame-

  • Draw attention to particular important characters/objects.
TASK: What does the following revel about the character/film?

This photo is suggesting awkwardness/tension or maybe that the two characters are exe. I get this impression because of the distance between the two, also because of them both facing forwards and having their arms crossed.

This photo suggests that the film is set on a boat as this looks as tho it is looking down to below deck on an old ship.

This photo shows that the men are equal, partners in crime possibly in a spy film or sci-fi.
It looks like they are on a futuristic ship with laser guns.

Looks like a sci-fi film. Due to the graphology it shows that there is one clear leader who is above all of the other robot army suggesting he has power over them.

Colour-

  • Adds meaning and purpose to a scene
  • Gives a particular look/feel to the mood
  • Dramatic effect
TASK:

Vintage lighting/colours, under tones, browns and oranges, dark/deep colours, old house layout and older styled furniture.

Lighting and colour-

  • Highlight important characters
  • Mysterious shading on certain areas
  • Reflects characters mental state/ hidden emotions
Types of lighting:

High key - Romantic comedy
  • Fuller lights
  • Natural/realistic to the eye
  • Sunny day
Low key - Horror films
  • Black lighting
  • Sharp contrasts between light and dark areas
  • Shadows and silhouettes formed
TASK:

A) High key lighting. the key lighting is on the faces which is showing the expressions of fear and anger on their faces.
B) Low key lighting. Spot light on the man leaving a shadow behind him. Brings attention to him looking up at something.
C) High key lighting. Natural lighting showing that it is during the day time.
D) Low key lighting. Light behind showing the silhouette and outline of a body, emphasising the horror film theme given off.
E) Low key lighting. Looks like it is set in a movie theatre and the main spot light is on the monster figure in the front of the screen (graphology).
F) High key lighting. Natural lighting and is brighter on the men to show their facial expressions and body language towards each other.

Semiotics of Film Poster

Semiotics-

The denotation of this poster is clearly the shark coming up from the bottom of the sea with a woman swimming unknowingly above it. The title 'jaws' is what I firstly noticed which correlates with the most noticable part of the shark.
I think that the connotation of this poster is that the shark is going to attack the woman, and is coming from the dark (bottom of the sea) into the light to hunt. Also the graphology of this is that the shark is much larger and stands out from the page which I believe is probably the aim of the designer so that it is the most eye catching thing to the audience, this then causes you to carry on looking and you notice the woman is right above the sharks nose. The shark has been made to be a significant size larger than the woman as it causes more fear in the viewer and has more of an impact than a small shark would.
I think that there is only the shark and woman in this image (rather than fish) as it makes the woman seem as though she is alone and there is no one or nothing that can help her.
I think that a the text 'JAWS' has been written in large bold text to make it stand out to the audience and also because it is clear and easy to read, possibly suggesting that it is going to be that simple for the shark to kill the woman. I also noticed that the text is in red which is commonly associated with blood and death, again another clue of what is going to happen before you have even seen the film. I think that this has all been done to make the audience want to watch the film.

Genre Photos

DISTINCT

Describe
In detail
Settings
Themes - love/hate
Icons - significant props
Narrative - plot
Characters
Textual analysis - style of camera angle, editing, mise en scene, and sound.

This is what looks like a poster/ advert for a film called 'A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET' which is shown through the graphology also. the image of the girl laying in bed is suggesting her sleeping and the dark shadow and hand with knifes on over is suggesting the nightmare. We assume that the street we can see if Elm street which looks like a residential area in America. The theme could be good v evil, the girl being the good and purity and the figure in the background being the evil. the clear/stand out point in this picture is the hand which looks similar to the wolverines hand. The film is clearly about the girl having a night mare and possibly haunting and following her, however the rest of the plot line is unclear. The clear main characters are the girl and the man shown on screen. The layout of the page has been done in a very interesting way which gets the audiences attention as a faded picture has been put over half of the screen to make it more eye catching.

I think that this image was successful because it represents the theme of crime well and shows clearly what it is. I like how we played with different lighting and angled to achieve  a silhouette affect, however I think we could have tried a larger range of angles and body positions.

In this photo we was working with the genre 'musical', this idea was inspired by high school musical during the scene where Troy and Gabriella are fist singing with each other for the first time. I think that this was quite successful as it is clear what the genre is, however we could have chose a stronger static pose so that Harriett wasn't blurred.

For our final photo our genre was romance, I think this worked quite well because we used props which suggest a relationship, i.e a flower this is a loving gesture. To improve we could have used a different colour wig as this could be misinterpreted as a drama rather than a romance.

Music video

I chose this music video by Kesha because it think it holds a strong message and the video its self has been structured and filmed in an interesting way to provoke emotion. Kesha's influences within music consist of hip hop, punk rock, pop, dance music and classic country.
This video has been filmed in an interesting way which entertains the audience because it shows flashbacks to when she was younger and her acting out the same thing in the present. The song title 'Learn to let go' could be suggesting she needs to leave her past behind her and move on with her life, which is a very powerful message not only to her fans but to Kesha herself, possibly representing something traumatic she has gone through that she needs to learn to let go of.

Gender -
  • Typically women are seen as being housewives and doing very minimal work outside of the household and men are the ones to go out and work, therefore bringing in the income.
  • Men stereotypically get the higher paying, more respected jobs such as pilots, doctors, orthodontists, where as women are expected to have jobs as a nurse or teacher.
  • People also expect pink to be more of a feminine colour and blue to be masculine.
  • Women are expected to wear make up and seen as normal where as men are looked down on and judged because it isn't common.

In this commercial it shows two men at a fast food restaurant which is automatically suggesting that men stereotypically eat fast foods and according to this women don't. The second man then opens his mouth and it has been edited to open extremely wide and just swallow the burger whole, which again suggests that men eat a lot of fast, fatty foods.

This trailer is of two sisters who get trapped in a pool and cant get out. I think this has been done because the idea that men at strong and can do anything suggests that they would be able to get out and survive, whereas by the director choosing two sisters it builds the stereotype of women being weak and fragile.

This trailer shows a female magician in a small swimming costume and heels with a group of men gathering around her shouting and screaming. typically men wear suits whilst doing under water magic tricks, however women stereotypically wear small skinty outfits because it gathers a larger audience.

Counter type-

This man goes against a gender stereotype that only women can wear makeup. Gradually over time it is become more accepted that anyone can wear makeup and just because they are male that doesn't make them necessarily gay. Also it is very common to find that some of the best and most popular makeup you tubers are men, whereas 2 years +ago this wouldn't have been accepted at all.

I think that this ad is another interesting example of gender stereotypes and how age is another factor which will set these stereotypes.

Me

I enjoy watching films and tv shows, in particular the twilight sagas and I'm a celebrity for different reasons but manly because I find them both amusing and entertaining to watch as a viewer therefore keeping me interested and wanting to see more.
I use the previous social media on a daily basis as it allows me to stay in contact with new and old friends or if they live far away it is an easy way to communicate. Also because it allows me to stay up to date on what is going on both online and in the world, from news reports on hurricane Harvey (Facebook/Snapchat-buzzfeed) to what my friends have been doing.

Summer Transition Work

Task 2)
Wonder Woman Trailer (comic-con)

After watching the wonder woman trailer my attention was grabbed by multiple factors, such as: the lighting, how the scenes were shot, but mainly by the choice of music and how the pace and tempo changed throughout depending on the nature of the scene.
The trailer starts with calming and quiet opera singing, which is gently assisted by the sound of delicate waves. This helps to set the scene before we have even seen the setting. Along with this there is a faint steady drum beat at the pace of a normal heart beat. Whilst this is going on we see a man from the army shelters was up on shore who has just been found by a woman who we are led to believe is wonder woman. This fits well with the music because the drum could be representing his heart beat and again the wave sound is showing the setting.
The music then changes to more of a chanting and as if a storm is about to uprise. This is then building the tension and atmosphere for the viewers as it gives the impression that a battle is about to occur.
This repetitive chanting continues until Dianna arrives at a train station when what seems like Dianna's mother says 'be careful Dianna' then the chanting stops and an air horn sounds.

Task 3)

This representation of the female body is negative. It s setting an unachievable (for most) body goal for young women and teenagers, it is targeted at them to make them want to look like the woman in the picture. This picture is suggesting what women should look like if they want to beautiful, for example; having the perfect figure, long legs, tall, perfect skin, a symmetrical face, and designer clothing. A lot of these things are unrealistic for most average women and it is teaching them that if you don't fit these expectations then you are 'ugly'. This forces women to starve themselves in order to try to achieve these goals, which leads to health issues in many cases, such as anorexia. The 'flawless' skin has been photoshopped and airbrushed to help build the idea of a completely perfect ideal woman and anyone who looks anything less than this is simply worthless.

Task 4)
The big 6 and what they do-

  • The big 6 is the most well known and widely used approach to teaching information and technology skills in the world.
  • Tv and film is a major success in the big 6. Its constantly being changed and improved due to the amount of people who watch films and tv. One major company that the media have a huge influence on are the owners of Disney. Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney earns around 44.9million dollars a year and that just goes to him alone. Disney constantly create and release new films which are made for a range of different audience age groups, therefore this attracts a larger audience brining in a great rate of income. Recently, the film 'Beauty and the Beast' has been released and has set a new record debut of 170million dollars.
  • The production budget is 160,000,000
  • The big six consist of;
20 Purple unicorns walk sausage dogs
20- 21st century fox
Purple- Paramount
Unicorns- Universal
Walk- Warner Brothers
Sausage- Sony
Dogs- Disney
